Anyone that had any doubts about last night’s event before going need not have worried. It was a new venue for P&P and the line-up faced a significant blow when Fake Blood pulled out at the last minute due to illness. However, pretty much as soon as the venue started filling up and the music got started (James Ark and Oli Hackett doing a sterling job behind the decks), all of those doubts evaporated. As Louis La Roché’s sampling of Pearl & Dean suggested, we were in for a spectacle: all we had to do was sit back and enjoy some of the best DJs around.
Louis La Roché was a relatively unknown figure to Manchester, last night being his début in our city. However, it seems certain that he will return as last night’s set was awesome. The 18 year old from Norwich showed us how it’s done, mixing up some dirty electro and sweet house. We also got to hear live some of the Parisian pure house tunes off his The Peach EP. These tracks are made for the clubs and they sounded amazing, especially the title track. If you haven’t heard these yet, get on it, it’s a free download from his myspace. As last night proved, Louis La Roché is going to be huge this year and we should all be trying to see him whenever we can.
Fake Blood was not in the building but his tunes certainly were. Louise La Roché dropped Mars and the Stuck On Repeat remix and Oli Hackett put down the Touch Too Much remix, all of which the crowd went crazy for. Mars, especially, sounded huge and tickets for the upcoming free Fake Blood event will be highly sought-after so keep your ears to the ground for that one.
Then came the big guns and The Count & Sinden absolutely killed it with 2 hours of storming electro, pounding beats, killer dubstep reworks of old skool classics, and Hervé’s pop remixes that, guaranteed, send any dancefloor crazy. They did it with style – these guys took on and left ‘fidget house’ before it became just another blueprint for dance music – but last night definitely had an all-out party atmosphere to it as well. They know what makes dance music fun and the combination in their set of highs like the joyous dance-pop of Hervé’s remix of Kidda and lows like the dubstep bass drops of Scuba’s Respirator made their set so enjoyable and definitely one to remember. Apart from remixes, their own tracks, such as Hardcore Girls, absolutely smashed the dance floor last night. The Count & Sinden are just right on it at the moment.
Round 1 of 2009 complete, then, for Prostitutes & Policemen. The Funktion 1 soundsystem was truly something else, the crowd completely up for it and the DJs happy to respond.

LUKID
—–
Inspired by obsessions with artists such as The Beatles, Phil Spector, Can, Theo Parrish and Autechre, Lukid produced his 2007 debut album “Onandon” to wild critical acclaim pioneering the early developments of what is now commonly known as “Wonky” a complex and intricately plotted instrumental document that unfolded with slow-burning textured detail, that often recalled the gravely disposition of early DJ Shadow. Yet it’s his grace, sample dexterity and excessive panache that pitch this kid oceans away from the weary blunted brigade.
In a world where artists’ influences can appear paradoxical or sometimes completely unrelated, Lukid hammers his sounds into a single sheet of incredibly intriguing electronic music. You won’t already need to be in love with the languorous beat constructions of Madlib, Dabrye, Flying Lotus, Samiyam and the like to find yourself gently but emphatically floored by the talents of a producer who has built a sound that takes in the low clunk of Cologne minimalism and the low slung soul of Detroit’s latter-day mix of cross-pollinated house and hip-hop.
