So “Wacko Jacko” died yesterday. It was a bit of a shock. As a person who never really listened to Michael Jackson I wasnt really bothered I appreciate that it is in a way a big event which is going to be in the media for some time to come.  However what i found most interesting was the response on Facebook and Twitter etc.  For the first time since these social networking websites have been widely in use a worldwide event managed to unite everyone on facebook. In minutes the whole page was flooded with status updates from everyone with varied responses about Jackson’s death ranging from distasteful jokes to nostalgic obituaries.  Never before has news been able to travel so fast.   Its amazing when events like this occur which seem to capture us for an hour or two.  it’s like time stops. All people talk about is what has just happened.  All people want is more information.  The last time i remember feeling like that was when the 7/7 bombings happened in London.  Which is mad.  That a terrorist attack probably doesnt cause as much interest as the death of a famous popstar.  I just wanted to draw attention to the fact that modern technology like the internet is amazing and its just crept up on us, in the 80’s people couldnt have imagined that one day there would be a resource which is updated every second which everyone is linked to and yet we dont even notice how amazing or ultimately modern it is.extraordinary events like Michael jackson’s death to illustrate this.  So even thought I wasnt a fan I think i will always remember Michael Jacksons death because of what i witnessed on the internet.

We got in touch with Brazilian documentarist Bruno Natal the director of the DVD Dub Echoes which we featured last week (VIEW)to get the lowdown on making the Dub documentary and also what hes got coming up…
.
.
EXAMPLE:  What made you want to make a documentary about the roots of dub and its influence on modern electronic music?

BRUNO: The researcher of the film Chicodub and I would always talk about how we felt there was a massive dub  influence in electronic music and hip hop, but how little people knew about it, or even how little it was commented about in books or even articles in magazines. So we would say it would be a dream to make a film to talk about this, until like every dream you dream of hard enough, it became true.

EXAMPLE:  Making the film took you to a number of different locations and you met a lot of interesting musicians.  Do you have any highlights from your time making the film??

BRUNO: The trip to Jamaica was unbelievable. We had very little time there and it was amazing how we got to talk to pretty much everyone we wanted. Meeting Lee Perry was also very special, especially because he was the last interviewee, so it made the whole thing come to an end. We could not have had a film about dub without Perry being in it.

EXAMPLE:  As a fan of dub how did it feel meeting some of the biggest names in the Dub scene?

BRUNO: Great! That was part of the thrill of making it, getting to talk about dub with some of our idols in music. And also, because of this approach, all the interviews went pretty smoothly.

EXAMPLE:  What music do you listen to apart from dub and jamaican music?

BRUNO: Everything and anything, as long as it is good. I love Brazilian music, electronic music, rock and latin, specially.

EXAMPLE:  Examplemag.co.uk  mainly covers the dubstep and drum and bass scene in manchester and the UK  which at the moment is prettty popular. is drum and bass as popular in Brazil? and if not what is?
BRUNO: Drum n Bass was bigger here between the late 90s and early 2000, when Marky and Patife were hiding high. Now it sort of went undergound again. Dubstep is very small, with only a couple of parties in São Paulo ran by Tranquera.org. In terms of very electronic music what gets really popular here is cheesy, commercial productions. Thats the kind of stuff that plays on the radio. But in the alternative scene, minimal and electro are very popular.

EXAMPLE:  What future projects have you got planned?

BRUNO: I’m still in the early stages of two new documentaries, none of which are about music. One is about urban violence in Rio, the other about football. Right now I’m directing/producing a reality show for cable TV.

EXAMPLE: Did you expect the overwhelming response that dub echoes has received?

BRUNO: To be honest, no. We did expect it to become some sort of underground cult film, but could never imagine being reviewed in so many publications worldwide and invitations for festivals around the globe. Being released by Soul Jazz was the cherry on top of it all.

Thanks a lot Bruno.

Thank you!

EXAMPLE:  Last Question we ask everyone…

What tune could you not live without at the moment?

BRUNO: Probably “The Reeling”, by Passion Pit. I have been listening to this record like crazy lately.

“DUB ECHOES” released in MAY 2009 is a documentary charting the history of jamaican dub and its influence in most of todays electronic dance music such as DUBSTEP and DRUM AND BASS as well as HIP HOP. featuring interviews with a variety of musicians includinROOTS MANUVA and KODE 9 this DVD is a must for any dub head out there get involved.

The winner of the new SUBDEPTH release from our comp  is

JONTY OLIVER with his correct  answer of tom jones haha

congratulations that will be winging its way to you quicksmart.

Hold tight for another comp weve got coming up this week.  More tunes to be won people.

We saw this track surface on dubstep forum a couple of weeks ago.  The arrival of another big american star on the dubstep scene could cause some controversy as we saw a few weeks ago with the snoop dogg chase and status remix.  Not sure if this is real or not as there have been a large amount of horrendous bootlegs being headed up on dubstep forum  such as this one…

If you survived that horrendous piece of audio   heres the lil john diplo track…

Not sure any either of these are really bearable or real to be honest with you.

CHECK THIS OUT PEOPLE.  BIG MANCUNIAN MOVEMENTS GOING DOWN HERE  FIRST WAX RELEASE FROM SUBDEPTH RECORDS GET INVOLVED…

6BLOCC    WAR    AND K1   BADNESS

War/Badness

Dubstep rave anthems from 6blocc and O.G Manchester producer K1. West Coast souljah 6Blocc takes over the A-side with ‘War’, holding back the lethal drop until it’s absolutely necessary and instead concentrating on working up a hooky riddim with a cheeky dancehall sample before he smacks us up with the bass.
K1’s been doing his thing for as long as we can remember now, pestering us over the counter for test pressings we didn’t even have yet and generally holding down the grime and dubstep thing in this city. ‘Badness’ is his debut production on wax and it’s a well trained beast, continuing their theme of ballistic brukkout joints with a battle ready rave cut to fire up the dance.
Big tracks! (Boomkat write up)

Example Magazine Mix 001  by Numan

http://www.examplemag.co.uk/?p=422

Interview with SABRE- The man behind Ape.

.

Our main woman   Rhona Example   caught up with Sabre this week to grill him about this weeks ape, Ape’s early years and also  what Ape’s got in store for us in the future…..

.

Rhona: When did you start promoting?

.

Sabre: I started promoting round about ‘97 on a kind of  part time basis like a hobby basically. (Rhona: which nights did you promote) I always promoted my own nights. We started out – threw a birthday party, it was three of us who were doing it. We always wanted to play more than we were being offered gigs so we threw a birthday party and we sold out a club for like 600/ 700 people and so, that’s how we all started. We started out this night called Viagra Fools and that was drum and bass with hip hop in another room. We started off at Club North which is now called blink I think  and then we moved it to subspace which at the time was  called generation x  and we used to run that on three floors: downstairs – drum n bass, middle floor was hip hop , upstairs was anything goes really. From then we moved to club Havana which is now called the ruby lounge. Ape was kind of born as a result of Viagra Falls basically

.

Rhona: Why did you choose the Apollo as the venue?

.

SABRE ;  Ape was born in Sankeys; we then got asked to move it to the Warehouse Project when those guy started that at Boddingtons. So when we done the first year of Boddingtons we did a couple of Ape shows that sold out to like 3000 people . And obviously with the warehouse project being on for twelve weeks a year we were kind of like ‘were do we take it now?’ We went to venues, we thought about going back to places like Sankeys and that but we thought we’d try a gamble and go for something a bit fresh – a bit different and I’d always really loved the venue. So we talked to the guys at the Apollo, to see what they thought  about us bringing a big drum n bass night down there and you know, fortunately, they were open-minded about it, they knew our track record was great and everything . The police were happy for us to go ahead with so we gave it ago and it was an absolute monster. So we did two that year  and then we gave it a miss last year purely because we were involved in another project at the time and our hands were tied.  Then this year obviously, when the warehouse ended, we looked at it again and thought lets go back to the Apollo. And we’ve done a three part series, the third of which is this Friday.

sabre

Rhona: Ape’s got quite a name for itself. It’s a well awaited night down here in Manchester, people are always buzzing about up and coming and previous Apes, being the man organising I suppose it must get a bit stressful.

SABRE :   There are parts of it which obviously are stressful it’s a lot more work than I think people think when they try and promote nights and sales and do what I do for a living. You know, you burn every hour God sends if your good at your job and obviously you have the stress of not having your salary coming in; if your run your own promotions what you earn is purely based upon the success of the event so there’s stress involved on that side of it but you know that’s part of why we do what we do; and other than that you know I love my job and every job has got stressful sides to it and they are normally related to money and hours so there is nothing new there but yeah, you know I love my job.

.

Rhona: I suppose when the night kicks and you get to see it all come into place it becomes quiet fulfilling

.

SABRE : Yeah its kinda like a science and an art putting on an decent event. So obviously being able to know how to promote and what buttons to press in order to get bums on seats so to speak -that’s the science side of it and obviously the arts side is actually the show of the event itself and we try and put on a show – a proper show in oppose to just a guy playing music on a sound system and I think we pull that off well with Ape. We work hard to use visuals, your various bits and bobs like that, take care with the venues we use, we always want to try and bring the best sound systems in the best venues – you know make it feel like your going to something a bit special. You know we kinda fit what we do between a regular club night and going to a festival you know – it’s more of an event .

.

Rhona: This following ape will be the third this year, everyone’s really looking forward to it but what have you got planned for Apes after this one?

.

Sabre: After this Ape we generally take a bit of a break for the summer, from Manchester anyway. Our events are very popular with the student population so summers a bit quiet. …

.

Rhona: Will you be touring with ape?

.

SABRE: We’ve looked at that before. It’s our second time doing one of the main areas at Creamfields this year. We’re really chuffed to be invited to do that. Especially more chuffed seeing as we did such a good job last year that they wanted us back this year. Regards to actually touring with it: no. Mainly because – its something we might do in the future but you know you have to have the confidence and the promoters in the other cities you want to tour it with. You know like I said it’s not just about putting on a line up it’s about a show. We’d have to have faith in the people in the other cities to promote it and produce it as well as you do. It’s something we are not in the hurry to do. But it certainly something we haven’t ruled out for the future.

.

Rhona: Can you tell us anything about what you’ve got in store for line ups?

.

SABRE: We’re not allowed to reveal anything at this stage to be honest. We tend to reveal our line ups one event at a time but I can tell you, especially for the back end of the year we have got some really interesting talent coming to Ape and Ape related events. Its gonna be amazing actually. Few of the names you will definitely of heard of who have played for us before from slightly different genres of music and then some really good fresh up an coming talent and then obviously a lot of the big guns who play for us on a regular and you know they do that for a reason. We got some really exciting stuff for later in the year – honestly I think everyone s going to be really happy when they see the line up later on in the summer.

.

Rhona:  Obviously a lot of the artist you have performing at Ape are dubstep and dnb artist. This genre of music seens as quite sweet and small at the moment, can you see it branching out and getting bigger?

.

Sabre: Obviously they are underground music styles and that what I specialise in. They’re never gonna go massive – they’re never gonna go like hip hop but I think that when a music genre comes up as something fresh – people can jump on to it. For instance in the nineties drum and bass n jungle was massive – massive. Some of that stuff was getting into the top forty, people like uncut and their tune “Midnight” for example, DJ Marky and people like that were getting into the charts . Umm I think drum and bass will obviously struggle to get to those heights again but I think obviously with dubstep that has the potential to reach those heights in the next few years. I think in regards to being strong in the undergorund I think they are massive at the minute. Underground music techno and drum and bass are two of the biggest things out there right now in my opinion. But in regards to like hitting it out in the mainstream dubstep with like some good cross overs especially by people like Skream – I mean he’s just beyond dubstep really. This guy can produce music of any quality so yeah – dubstep I’m quite excited about.

.

Rhona: Last question what do you love most about your job.

.

Sabre  : That I’ve got it.

This month is Example’s sixth month.   We’ve had some problems since January and definitely some teething problems .  But We’ve got big things lined up for this month…

We’re conjuring up some content as we speak to make up for our lack of commitment through the examtime :P , and of course weve got a massive few weeks coming up shortly end of terms for all the students and the collection of events goin down across town can only mean a month of MASHUP (and sun).  this week as always we’ve got hit and run to kick off our week and then the third injection of Strange Fruit on thursday which should warm all of you up nicely for APE at the Apollo on Friday night, which we all know will be another mad one.  We’re gonna do our best to have some pictures to show for the week to come. So hold tight for those people!!!!

Keep on it People    Big tings on the Way :)
